Holiday Hosting: Creating a Warm & Welcoming Christmas Tablescape
There is something truly magical about opening your home during the holidays. Every Christmas, I host upwards of thirty family members and friends for dinner, and it is always one of my greatest joys of the season. Welcoming people in, sharing a meal, celebrating the year’s milestones, both large and small, reminds me how important it is to create a setting that feels special, intentional, and deeply inviting.
For me, holiday hosting isn’t simply about décor; it’s about building an experience. A table where everyone feels seen. A seat that feels meant just for them. A design that reflects the beauty of the season and the natural world around us.
Living in a rustic lake community, I am constantly inspired by nature evergreens, winter berries, and the quiet serenity of the outdoors. This time of year is the perfect opportunity to bring that natural beauty inside.
My Favorite Elements for a Beautiful Holiday Table
1. Start With Natural Greenery
Nothing sets the tone like real greens. I begin with a simple linen tablecloth and then layer various pines, cedar, and fir branches down the center. I’ll often clip fresh berries from bushes outside or mix in silverdollar eucalyptus for extra softness and depth. The variation in texture instantly creates warmth and movement.
2. Incorporate Seasonal Fruits & Vegetables
Some of the most beautiful décor comes from the produce aisle.
A few of my favorites:
Kumquats (their color is stunning this time of year)
Pomegranates for that rich, festive red
Artichokes to add an unexpected texture
Dried orange slices, baked low and slow until they turn a deep tangerine color
These elements bring warmth, color, and an organic elegance to the table and you can eat them after the holidays! Adding in non edible large gold ornaments throughout can also elevate the table and give it a little sparkle.
3. Create Mood With Candlelight
Candles are non-negotiable for me. The soft flicker instantly transforms a table. I keep them low votives and shorter pillars so guests can see each other without distraction.
A favorite trick:
Place candles on small mirrors scattered along the table. The added reflection creates a subtle glistening glow and enhances the ambiance, especially when paired with a fire crackling in the background.
4. Elevate with Linen Napkins & Simple Details
Cloth napkins always feel luxurious. I often tie them with a satin or velvet ribbon and tuck in a small sprig of greenery or a little jingle bell. It’s effortless, festive, and personal.
5. Use Place Cards to Encourage Connection
Place cards do more than tell guests where to sit, they help spark new conversation and avoid the “everyone pile in with their usual group” pattern. When you’re hosting a large gathering, thoughtful seating makes the evening flow beautifully.
6. Make the Table Practical, Too
A long table can be tricky, so I always scatter:
Small salt & pepper sets every few seats
Mini butter dishes placed at intervals
It keeps the meal easy, gracious, and seamless for everyone.
At the end of the day, you don’t need complicated decorations or expensive pieces, just layers of natural elements, warm lighting, and thoughtful touches that make your guests feel cared for.
